RENTAL ASSISTANCE

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE AND SECURITY DEPOSITS

HOPES CENTER DOES NOT HAVE RENTAL ASSISTANCE / SECURITY DEPOSITS

Housing is always challenge, especially for people with low incomes. This challenge is increased by a shortage of affordable housing units in Racine. There are limited options for housing and assistance when people have an emergency and are unable to pay for rent or at seeking funds for a security deposit. If a household has income and wants to rent somewhere, our first advice is to stay with friends or family if possible for a month or two and save the money for a security deposit while you search for an apartment you can afford.

To the best of our knowledge there is very little rental and security deposit assistance currently available (2024).

  • Racine County Human Services (through W2/Rescare), 1717 Taylor Avenue (262) 638-6348. Emergency Assistance (sometimes including rental assistance) is available for households that have custody of minor children and can demonstrate that they are in a financial crisis.

  • St. Vincent De Paul (262) 497-2734: St. Vincent De Paul has limited rental assistance available, usually in small amounts to help top up a rental payment if a household had an emergency and can’t pay the entire rent in a given month. They usually want to see that the person has the income needed to pay rent the following month. To the best of our knowledge, they do not typically give large amounts for rental assistance or security deposits.

  • Salvation Army, 1901 Washington Ave (262) 632-3147: Rental Assistance is not currently available from Salvation Army. They may have rental assistance again sometime in summer 2024.

  • HOPES Center of Racine: HOPES Center does not have emergency rental assistance available.

  • Racine Kenosha Community Action Agency: Community Action no longer has WERA Vouchers (Wisconsin Emergency Rental Assistance) available and does not currently have rental assistance.
